North Carolina Teacher Continuing Education

North Carolina requires an individual holding a continuing license to renew every five years based on the completion of ten semester hours or fifteen units of renewal credit. The professional development activities are to focus in the areas of content knowledge, content pedagogy, assessment, diverse learners, leadership, technology, and other areas relating to the teacher’s professional assignment(s) and license field(s). The renewal credit is based on an activity that is delivered in a minimum of 10 clock hours over time with on-the-job application, feedback, and follow-up. Individuals teaching in grades kindergarten through eighth grade must complete three renewal credits in reading methods courses during each five-year renewal cycle. The employing school system is responsible for determining the appropriateness of an activity for its teachers. If the individual is not currently employed, then the Licensure Section of the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction would determine if the courses or activities taken are appropriate. To determine if an activity can be approved, please contact the personnel officer at the employing school district, or if not employed, the Licensure Section, NCDPI, (919) 807-3310.
