Matisse, Picasso and the School of Paris

In the late 19^th century, a school of French artists manifested such brilliance that they put Paris in the center of modern art and culture until the outbreak of World War II. Matisse, Picasso and the School of Paris delves into the artistic minds of two masters of French modernism, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, and showcases 74 paintings, sculptures and drawings by such artists as Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne, Bonnard, Monet, Signac, Rodin, Degas, Modigliani, Braque, Léger, Miró, Masson and Giacometti.

The traveling exhibit features selections from the collection of Etta and Claribel Cone, two wealthy and adventurous sisters who acquired a vast collection of modern art, including over 400 works by Matisse and over 100 by Picasso. The Cones' fortune derives in part from Moses and Ceasar Cone's textile mills in Greensboro. Their collection resides at the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Featured prominently are the works of the two preeminent masters of French modernism, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, represented in the exhibition by 35 paintings, sculptures and drawings. The program was the proud recipient of a 2006 regional Emmy Award.
