BIO CON Excerpt -- Howard Lee, Part 1
Shannon Vickery begins
the first of a three part Biographical Conversations with Howard Lee.
Mr. Lee became the first African-American mayor of Chapel Hill in 1969.
He was the first African-American to hold the position in the American
South. Mr. Lee has also served as a state senator and has chaired the
North Carolina Board of Education. He is currently the executive
director of the North Carolina Education Cabinet. Shannon's expanded
conversation with Mr Lee airs on Sunday, November 7th at 7 p.m.

Community College System and U.S. Congressman. The University Award is
the highest honor the board of governors bestows for outstanding
contributions to higher education.

WWII -- Helen Snapp / WASP
Rob
Holliday tells the story of Helen Snapp, a member of the Women Airforce
Service Pilots, or WASP, who flew military aircraft during World War
II. Ms. Snapp was stationed at Camp Davis at Holly Ridge in Onslow
County from 1943-44 and flew bombers and pursuit planes in combat
training missions. One of her duties was towing aerial targets over
Topsail Island for anti aircraft gunners practicing with live
ammunition. UNC-TV pays tribute to the Tar Heel State's men and women
who served and sacrificed in what was called "the deadliest conflict in
human history." The two hour documentary "North Carolina's WWII
Experience" airs on Tuesday, December 7th at 8 p.m.

Newsmaker: Frank Bruni / Restaurant Critic
David Huppert interviews UNC Chapel Hill alumnus and former New York Times
restaurant critic Frank Bruni. Mr. Bruni, who still writes for the NYT, reflects on his
experiences in North Carolina as well as the themes explored in his book
“Born Round: The Secret History of a Full-Time Eater." The book chronicles his
childhood obesity, diet and fitness, the restaurant scene, and being a
New York Times’ reporter.

Tanger Outlet Center Opening
Stephanie Bourland takes us to the grand opening of Tanger Outlet Center in Mebane. The $65
million dollar center has nearly 80 stores. Tanger has outlets all
over the country and is headquartered in
Greensboro. The new center brought nearly 800 full and part time jobs
that needed to be filled.
