Dr. Assad Meymandi of Raleigh Appointed to UNC-TV Board of Trustees

The University of North Carolina Board of Governors has appointed Dr. Assad Meymandi of Raleigh to a four-year term on the UNC-TV Board of Trustees. The appointment will run through June 30, 2012.

Dr. Meymandi is in private practice as a psychiatrist and neurologist and serves as an adjunct professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a noted physician, editor, and philanthropist, who frequently speaks and writes on diverse topics that relate to his interests in medicine, the arts, religion, and philanthropy. He lives in Raleigh with his wife Emily.

“It is an honor to welcome someone of the stature of Dr. Assad Meymandi to our Board of Trustees,” said Tom Howe, director and general manager of UNC-TV. “His visionary leadership in our community is well known, and we look forward to having the benefit of his thoughtful counsel in the years ahead.”

Dr. Meymandi earned his M.D. degree from George Washington University School of Medicine. In addition, he holds Ph.D.s in both biochemistry and philosophy, and he was awarded an honorary doctorate in humanities.
Among his many noteworthy achievements, Dr. Meymandi is founding editor and editor-in-chief of The Wake County Physician. He currently serves on the boards of the North Carolina Symphony, the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild, the Triangle Opera Company, and numerous other civic organizations. In addition, he is a trustee of the National Humanities Center, where the Meymandi Philanthropic Program, established in 1997, has endowed the Meymandi Fellowship to bridge the gap between basic sciences, the arts, and humanities.

Dr. Meymandi is a member of the John Locke Foundation Board of Directors, serves on the board of the North Carolina Humanities Council, and is a former board member of the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County and the Raleigh Oratorio Society. In 2004 Governor Mike Easley presented Dr. Meymandi with the highest civilian award conferred by the state of North Carolina, the Order of the Longleaf Pine.
