Author David Guy Shares Jakes Fades: A Novel of Impermanence

An aging Zen master and bicycle repairman confronts his mortality and looks for a successor in Jakes Fades: A Novel of Impermanence, the new novel by Duke Professor, and longtime Buddhist practitioner, David Guy.

In an all-new episode of UNC-TV’s local literary series North Carolina Bookwatch with D.G. Martin, premiering Friday, October 5, at 9:30 PM, the Durham author explores the Zen landscapes of Jakes Fades, acknowledged as a low-key tale of meditation, mentoring, and mouth-watering baked goods.

David Guy teaches writing in the Hart Leadership Program and the Masters of Public Policy Program at Duke University. He is also a contributing editor to Tricycle and the author of Autobiography of My Body and The Red Thread of Passion.

In his latest frolicsome novel about Zen Buddhism, death and sexuality, he beautifully conveys the impermanence of life and the fragile bonds characterizing the spiritual teacher-student relationship, parenthood, friendship, and community.
