Terry SanfordThis hour-long homage to this storied native son, reveals the former FBI agent, WWII veteran, State Senator, Governor and Senator, who epitomized the word statesman. UNC-TV’s Shannon Vickery speaks with six North Carolinians who knew and worked with this prolific politican and educator. Panelists include:

Rep. Dan Blue, (D) Wake County, is currently a member of the NC House of Representatives.  He served in the NC House of Representatives from 1980-2002, and was the first African American to hold the post of Speaker of the House from 1991-1995.  Rep. Blue is a 1973 graduate of the Duke University School of Law.

Hodding Carter, III is the University Professor of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He spent eight years as president and CEO of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation in Miami.  He has also had a distinguished career in print and broadcast journalism. 

William Friday was the President of the University of North Carolina from 1956-1986.  He’s one of North Carolina’s most distinguished public servants who focuses on a wide range of issues facing the state.  He is also the host of UNC-TV’s North Carolina People.

Henry Frye was the Chief Justice of the NC Supreme Court from 1999-2001.  He was the first African American to serve in this position.  He has a distinguished law career that continues today.  He was a member of the N.C. House of Representatives from 1969-1980.  He served in the NC Senate from 1981-1982. 

Betty Ray McCain served as Secretary of the NC Department of Cultural Resources from 1993-2001.  She is a leader in the NC Democratic Party, where she served as party chair in the 1970s and co-chaired three of Gov. Jim Hunt’s gubernatorial races.   

Tom Lambeth served as a member of Gov. Terry Sanford’s staff from 1961-1965.  In 1965, he joined the Richardson Foundation of Greensboro.  In 1978, he became the executive director of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation in Winston-Salem. During his tenure, the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation awarded grants totaling more than $260 million to assist community economic development, the environment, pre-collegiate education, minority issues, and women's issues.  He is currently chairman of the NC Rural Economic Development Center.
