When daunting obstacles block your way, what do you do? Do you run, do you accept the status quo, or do you take on the fight? In a daring, often controversial way, Guilford County Schools look at educational obstacles head on--one by one. For issues such as dropout rate, achievement gaps, school funding, and teacher recruitment, educational leaders propose innovative initiatives, many requiring collaboration with educational administration, teachers, and the business community.

Taking Initiative: A Look Inside Guilford County Schools explores the issues in Guilford County education, the strategies they devise, the corresponding initiatives, and most importantly, the impact that the initiatives have on students, teachers, and the community. This half-hour hour documentary investigates how one North Carolina school county takes on the most challenging issues that school systems across our country face today.

The Guilford County School System earns remarkable scholarship and academic achievements while devising innovative approaches that address the needs of individual students. For a look at Guilford County School demographics, student ethnic composition, academic achievements, and graduate information, see the Guilford County Schools' Progress Report.

The Joseph M. Bryan Foundation of Greater Greensboro, Inc., the Cemala Foundation and the Tannenbaum-Sternberger Foundation provided funding for "Taking Initiative: A Look Inside Guilford County Schools."
