TV Converter Box
The federally-mandated analog shut-off does not happen until February 2009, but the conversion to digital is simple. So, why not start enjoying digital television now?

Converter Box

Do I Need a Converter Box?

Television sets connected to cable or satellite and newer digital television sets with built-in digital tuners, will not be affected by the analog turn-off and do not need a converter box.  If you have an older analog set and get your television signal over the air with an antenna, you will a converter box to receive a digital television signal. If you have additional TV sets that are not digital or are not connected to cable or satellite, you will need a converter box for each of those sets in order to get a digital signal.

Help Getting a Digital Converter Box

To make the transition easier, the federal government is providing two $40 coupons, each good toward the purchase of one converter box for every household.  The typical cost of the converter box will be $50-$70.  The set-top box connects to your existing television set and antenna to let you continue receiving free television reception.  You will need a box for each television set you own that receives its signal over the air.

How do I Get the Coupons?

  • Call the coupon program 24-hour hotline at 1-888-388-2009.
  • Apply online at www.dtv2009.gov.
  • Mail a coupon application to P.O. Box 2000, Portland, OR 97208-2000.

How Does the Coupon Program Work?

Certified converter boxes will be available at most major electronic retail stores beginning in mid to late February.  Once you apply for the coupons, the government will mail them to you along with a list of retailers in your area beginning February 17, 2009.  You have 90 days after receiving the coupon to make your purchase.  You can use only one coupon per converter box. The digital converter box program is administered by the National Television Communications and Information Administration.

Connecting Your Converter Box

Many viewers have questions about how to connect their new converter boxes. Review Nebraska Educational Television's "Digital Converter Box Hookup" Guide outlining how to connect your converter box in conjunction with making the transition to digital television.
