As you may have heard, Congress has mandated significant changes for the entire television broadcasting industry. By law, all American television stations must complete their digital transition and turn-off their analog signal by February 17, 2009.  On that day, free over-the-air television (the way many of you now receive your TV signal) goes digital. With digital television (or DTV) you will notice crystal clear picture and sound–and receive additional free broadcast TV channels, including UNC-TV’s  digital channels.

Effective September 25, following a complex set of technical changes, UNC-TV began broadcasting 24 hours a day as a high-definition digital channel.   In order to make this possible, it was necessary to reduce our total number of over-the-air digital channels to three.  In addition to UNC-TV in HD, viewers who rely on an antenna are now also receiving UNC-KD, featuring all children's programming, and UNC-NC, with programs for and about North Carolina.  As a result, digital channels UNC-ED and UNC-HD are no longer available as over-the-air services, although they are still offered by some cable providers as part of their digital cable services.
