| Woodstock, 1969: Around the time that Tim Hardin was playing during the evening of the first day of the festival, a fight broke out between two fellows just in front of me. They were really tearing into one another and a lot of the people standing nearby turned to see what was going on. Someone spontaneously began chanting "Peace, peace, peace . . ." and the rest of us joined in. It was amazing but almost instantly the two guys stopped fighting and just disappeared into the crowd! They billed the festival as three days of peace, love, and music and, from what I saw, it certainly lived up to it! Jeff Mold, Norfolk VA
It was 1968. I was on my 6th grade class trip. We went from Elizabeth, NJ into the Big Apple to see Finingan's Rainbow and to eat at Moma Leone's. I had my little Kodak instamatic camera with me that held 12 shots. I hadn't taken a picture all day until we had arrived at Mama Leone's. As I got off the bus there was a sight I will never forget. A "hippie" was walking down the street towards us. He had long hair and wore a leather vest with little bells sewn into it. Six pictures when taken of this hippie walking towards us, then six more of him walking away. I'm not sure if I ever even developed the film, but that glimpse of this "other world" at that age set me upon the path to where I am now.(Lauren is a former attorney now trying to start an alternative community in northern Orange County, with a focus on community and farming.)
