North Carolina Museum of History Exhibitions:

  • Weapons of World War II
    Small exhibit of armaments used by American, German, and Japanese forces in the Second World War.
  • A Call to Arms: North Carolina Military History Gallery
    A look at North Carolina’s military heritage from the American Revolution to the Iraq War.
  • America's Secret Warriors:
    The OSS and the George Watts Hill Collection

    See objects used by the Office of Strategic Services in clandestine operations during World War II.
  • David Marshall "Carbine" Williams
    Workshop of famous inventor of weapon innovations, with information about his life.
  • Liberty and Freedom: North Carolina's Tour of the Bill of Rights
    (ONE WEEK ONLY! September 17th through September 23rd)
    North Carolina's original copy of the Bill of Rights, taken from the State Capitol in 1865 and recovered in an undercover operation in 2003.

Public Programs:

  • Summer Camp: On the Homefront
    July 16-20, 9 AM-noon
    Completed grades 3-5
    What was it like to live during World War II? Listen to wartime and swing music; taste Victory cooking; find out what soldiers wore, ate, and carried; write a V-mail letter; and shop with ration cards and red points.
  • Family Day
    Remembering WWII: North Carolinians at Home and Abroad
    Saturday, September 29, 11 AM-4 PM
    Nearly every North Carolina family has stories of World War II, stories of bravery, of sacrifice, and of hard work. Come hear some of these stories and learn how to preserve your family’s history at this celebration honoring the men and women who have been called “the Greatest Generation.”
    • Meet World War II veterans and hear about their experiences.
    • Listen to swing music and dance the lindy hop.
    • Look at World War II uniforms in the museum’s exhibits.
    • Visit a USO canteen and have some doughnuts and hot chocolate.
    • Plant a Victory Garden and make your own dog tags.
    • Look at scrapbooks and learn how to gather your family’s stories.
  • A Closer Look: Everybody’s War: North Carolina and World War II
    (A drop in program led by a museum volunteer that is scheduled regularly throughout the year. Volunteers are also available to take this period and reproduction items out to area senior and community centers). Learn about North Carolinian’s many contributions to the war effort, both at home and abroad. Flip through a scrapbook of the period, look at a garrison cap, and learn about planes potter bingo.
  • Veteran’s Day Program
    North Carolina’s WWII Veterans Tell Their Stories

    Sunday, September 11, 2 PM-4 PM
    Join several of North Carolina’s World War II veterans as they come together to tell their stories of survival, sacrifice, and honor. Come early to see displays by various veterans groups and World War II re-enacting units. A light reception follows the program.

  • US Army Center for Military History Conference
    June 19
    Collections management conference for the staff of military history museums housed on US military bases. One day of the session will be held at the NC Museum of History.
  • Ferebee Reception
    July 21
    A reception honoring the museum’s acquisition of a collection of military documents and objects related to the military service of Col. Thomas W. Ferebee (1918-2000). Ferebee, who grew up on a farm near Mocksville, was the bombardier of the B-29 bomber Enola Gay, which dropped the first atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945.
  • Reception for the 5th Division USMC Iwo Jima
    August 23
    The 5th Division of the USMC, whose members raised the US flag at Iwo Jima, will hold their national reunion in Raleigh in August. An evening reception will take place at the NC Museum of History and all WWII veterans are invited to attend.
