I enlisted in the Navy on December 30, 1942 and arrived in the Great Lakes Naval Center 01/01/1943 for boot camp. After 11 weeks, I was assiged to Northwestern Univ. Radio School. After completion of school, I was assiged to Submarine school (New London, CT), completed sub-sonar, radio school and was assiged new construction at Portsmouth, N.H. and the USS Plaice SS390.

After commissioning we were assigned to the Pacific and started our first War Patrol on June 7th, 1945. Our patrol was successful in sinking some enemy vessels and all hands were awarded the Submarine Combat pin. (This pin is only awarded if your patrol is successful. In the event it is not considered sucessful it is as if it never happened. In each patrol after the first for each successful patrol you receive a star in the pin. My pin has 3 stars denoting 3 addition successful patrols.)

In July of 1945, I returned to the States and was to attend Radio Tech. school, but since the war ended, changed my mind and was assigned to Key West Naval Base attached to the Flag. I left the service Feb. of 1946. I spent the rest of my time to date working as a salesman, and retired in 1990.

The statement I wish to make about WWll is that those that serviced in most cases were not heroes.
