An Appalachian Showcase
PodcastPlay Video: LOW Speed - HIGH Speed

Appalachian ShowcaseAn Appalachian Showcase features a variety of musical performances by student soloists and ensembles from Appalachian State University's Hayes School of Music.

"It's a really good introduction to the quality and diversity of the Hayes School of Music," said Dean William Harbinson. "Performances range from soloists to our largest ensembles, and from classical to gospel. It really gives a good insight into who we are and what we do."

In addition to musical selections, the program includes student interviews, comments from Hayes School of Music benefactor Mariam Cannon Hayes, HSOM advisory board chairman Charlie Clement, and Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock. The program is emceed by writer Bob Inman.

The program was taped in September before a live audience in Broyhill Music Center's Rosen Concert Hall.

"We never rehearsed the show from beginning to end," Harbinson said. "We rehearsed each segment. UNC TV arrived on a Wednesday and that afternoon we started taping dress rehearsals." Performing live before cameras can be enough to cause jitters even among seasoned performers, so the rehearsals were taped to provide a back-up should problems occur during the Friday evening concert. "To my surprise, we ended up using almost all the live performances," Harbinson said.
