Welcome to the Becoming American site for North Carolina. Our goal is to provide an inside look at some of the residents of North Carolina who originally came from mainland China or Taiwan. Through photos, personal testimonies, and lists of local events, Chinese groups and historical facts, we hope to provide a well-rounded view of what it means to be Chinese in North Carolina.
John Wei, a Chinese American from Taiwan, says that he wants to build more of a community for Chinese in North Carolina. An article in the Epochtimes mentions the incident that motivated Wei's plans:
"Since there is a natural cultural and language barrier for new immigrants to the US, many Chinese Americans have found it difficult to participate in mainstream activities. For example, in 1989, a Chinese Vietnamese Jim Lu, an immigrant, was killed in Raleigh, North Carolina, and the case prompted Chinese Americans to fight for their own rights. The case impelled John Wei to reach the notion that Chinese Americans must take active steps to bridge the gap between themselves and mainstream American society."
This Web site is ever changing, bringing new faces and voices to the story of the Chinese experience in North Carolina. UNC-TV would like you to be a part of this story. If you are Chinese or Taiwanese in origin, please write to us and tell us your story.
Please include your name, home in North Carolina, date of birth, place where you are from in China, and when you came to the US (if applicable). We look forward to hearing your voice soon!
