Before establishing goals and objectives, you must determine
why or whether you need a training on diversity. This can be done by examining
the material and your knowledge of a group or by distributing a brief
questionnaire if there is time. This process is called the needs assessment.
Here are some questions to help you.
- What are you must proud of in your community?
- What are you least proud of in your community?
- What's one thing you wish outsiders knew about
your community?
- Who are your community's local heroes?
- Who are the informal leaders, the local people
whose opinion carries weight?
- Where do the older people tend to gather? The
younger ones? Families?
- What cultural or historical landmarks exist
in your community?
- Which racial and ethnic groups are in your community?
How long have they lived there?
- Which cultural centers, religious institutions,
or organizations are most important to the community?
- What institutions have earned the most trust
in your community?
- Which issues are not covered enough in the community?
Next, you must establish the goals and objectives:
- What do you want to achieve at the end of this training?
- List three ways that you think that this end is best achieved?
Evaluation is a very important tool in everything that
we do. It should be incorporated into the planning of the training at
the beginning.
- How do you usually evaluate a session?
- Has this been an effective tool?
- How can this evaluation be taken a step further?
