| When Morton
was putting together the program for the Short Course banquet, one
of his colleagues suggested that they have someone entertain the
guests. He suggested a graduate student who was good at recitations,
and Morton hired him for $25. The graduate student was Andy Griffith,
and the recitation was "What It Was, Was Football." Morton
explains how it became the beginning of Andy's new career.

After a fierce
battle with the National Park Service to prevent tolls from being
installed on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Morton engages in a 12-year
fight with the NPS to prevent the parkway from being built over
Grandfather Mountain. With the state backing him and several entertainers,
including Arthur Smith, Morton eventually defeats the NPS's proposal,
giving way to the Linn Cove Viaduct.
