Fighting for Clean Air: PART 3 Issues:
While he was in Wilmington, Morton was concerned that the beach around Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was eroding too much, and that in time, the lighthouse would be completely surrounded by ocean. He petitioned Senator Jesse Helms to save the lighthouse from falling into the ocean, and the senator offered to ask his Congressional Club to help him raise money. Since Helms' group would have to work within the state system, Morton approached Governor Jim Hunt with his proposal to use Helms' Congressional Club.
