| While he was
in Wilmington, Morton was concerned that the beach around Cape Hatteras
Lighthouse was eroding too much, and that in time, the lighthouse
would be completely surrounded by ocean. He petitioned Senator Jesse
Helms to save the lighthouse from falling into the ocean, and the
senator offered to ask his Congressional Club to help him raise
money. Since Helms' group would have to work within the state system,
Morton approached Governor Jim Hunt with his proposal to use Helms'
Congressional Club. The unprecedented collaboration of the Republican
senator and the Democratic governor surprised the public so much
that the Club raised the entire amount it needed. Morton fondly
remembers this campaign.

talks about how pleased he was that the road was finally finished
and explains how the lack of money during the Depression slowed
building of the parkway, even though the Depression was the original
reason for building the parkway.
