| Brown vs. the Board of Education was successful at desegregating the county schools, but many of the city schools still retained separate black and white schools. After several Charlotte parents complained that they were not allowed to transfer from the black school to the integrated school, Chambers’ law firm reopened the Swann vs. Mecklenburg case and pursued it all the way to the Supreme Court. One of Chambers’ more controversial cases was over integrating the Shrine Bowl in Charlotte. Chambers took the case in response to African American teams that wanted to play in the Shrine Bowl but were barred from doing so. He reasoned that since the game took place in the city stadium, it was a city-sponsored event and should not be segregated. His stand was quite unpopular, as he relates in this clip.

In 1971, Chambers argues Griggs vs. Duke Power, a discrimination case in which Duke Power used a test to prevent black employees from being promoted. The case sparked new laws concerning employee rights. Chambers’ office was set on fire as a result. In this clip, Chambers explains what this case was about and what resulted from it.
