Jesse Helms Jr. was born in 1921 in Monroe, North Carolina to Jesse Helms, Sr. and Ethel Mae Helms. In this special clip, Senator Helms discusses his parents and the guidance they gave him as a young child.

In 1950, Frank Porter Graham and Willis Smith engaged in one the most contentious campaigns in North Carolina's history. Although Helms maintains that he played no part in any of the racial slurs or communist accusations, he does discuss the role he played in convincing Smith to push for a second primary.
