When Jim Holshouser was first elected to the North Carolina Legislature, he discovered that the Legislature was quite different from what he had imagined when he was in law school. In this video clip, he explains what was so surprising and what he learned from it.
When Holshouser was first placed on the House Board of Higher Education, the new state universities were still being placed in the state system. Each university competed with the others for funds, and Governor Bob Scott wanted to have everyone within the political and educational arenas on the same page. In this clip, Holshouser explains his role in facilitating the change of the Board from coordinating the universities to governing them.
