When Mary was
elected to City Council, she became the first woman to take a seat
on the Council. Two of her highest priorities were to make sure
African-Americans could register to vote in Durham and to influence
more women to get involved in politics. She talks about the political
climate at the time and her own hopes for what she can do.
Mary talks
about philanthropy in general, where its future lies and how the
current economy is affecting philanthropists. She points out that
philanthropy itself is no longer limited to a few large groups or
wealthy individuals, but more a diverse population is becoming involved.
She also says that the sinking economy is hurting philanthropists
as much as it is the general public, and that philanthropists are
finding the need to be more cautious with where they donate their
funds.
