UNC-TV's Television Race Initiative
Bridges To Diversity
The title, Bridges To Diversity , was selected by the UNC-TV staff to become an umbrella under which the network would feature programming that would reflect the changing face of North Carolina. UNC-TV was honored to be one of the six PBS affiliates, nationwide, that were selected to be part of the Television Race Initiative. This is a multi-year effort in which diverse, character driven, high-profile television broadcasts create a spine for sustained community dialogue and problem-solving around the issue of race relations.
Through this initiative, UNC-TV will work to foster on-going collaborations with community leaders across the state who are engaged in doing similar work. Initially, the pilot years were focused on the Research Triangle Area communities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. However, the project has now expanded to include screening and discussion events all across the state.
UNC-TV will use, as a touchstone, provocative and forward looking television programming about diversity to generate production discussion among key community leaders.
Community meetings serve as a sharing and training ground for leaders interested in using such thoughtful television programming found only on UNC-TV as a tool in this work. Additional activities will be scheduled throughout the year.
UNC-TV gratefully acknowledges funding for this initiative from the
John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
