On January 17, 1994, UNC-TV launched a bold experiment – to produce a nightly Monday-through-Friday public affairs program that would cover the important issues and people throughout the state of North Carolina in the depth for which public television is known. A small cadre of staff members set out to cover a large and diverse state with limited resources, but armed with a vision. Now, 20 years later, North Carolina Now remains UNC-TV’s flagship program.
To celebrate this milestone, UNC-TV has assigned veteran producer Bobby Dobbs to create a weekly series that will mine the North Carolina Now archives to highlight the reports and interviews that reveal the history of the past two decades as it unfolded year by year. While the on-screen graphics and hairstyles may have changed over the past 20 years, North Carolina Now’s determination to cover the state from the mountains to the coast and bring its most important stories home to you is as fresh and timely as it was from the day it went on the air. North Carolina Now and Then will premiere on Thursday, January 16 at 9:30PM, continuing as a regular weekly series for 20 weeks – one episode for each year the series has existed!
