Purple Heart Homes

John Gallina & Dale Beatty joined the NC National Guard in 1996. They responded to the call of duty to defend our country against terrorism serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. During their service both men were injured in a Hum-V incident with an anti tank mine. Now the two men continue to serve by giving back through their work with Purple Heart Homes.

Eustace Conway is passionate about his working farm & non-profit education center Turtle Island Preserve. For approximately 30 years, Eustace has made this remote wilderness east of Boone his home. As a visitor you might find yourself milking goats, gardening, building log cabins, even working in a saw mill. Whatever the task at hand, it will definitely be an experience you won't forget.

Women Roofers

Rutherford Housing Partnership & the local United Way co-sponsor an annual Week of Caring. In 2002, a Sunday school class volunteered to repair the leaky roof of a house. But only 2 women showed up. They fully expected to be turned away by the leader. Instead, the 3 enjoyed the experience so much they talked their friends into volunteering to replace an entire roof & a service group was formed.

After a prolific career, including 19 seasons at the Metropolitan Opera, singer Elvira Green shares her passion, instruction and global performance experience with students as an artist in residence at North Carolina Central University. The Macon, North Carolina native is a graduate of NCCU and trained as a classical pianist for 18 years before pursing her singing career.

Gary Sinise Foundation Ambassador

MSG John Masson served in the US Army in Operation Desert Shield & Operation Desert Storm, & was deployed during Operation Iraqi Freedom & Enduring Freedom. In 2010 he lost an arm & both legs to an IED. A Purple Heart & Bronze Star recipient, MSG Masson uses his experiences to educate & inspire others in his work as an ambassador with the Gary Sinise Foundation.

Air Born Aerial Fitness

One of the most popular fitness crazes to hit the scene within the last five years is aerial fitness. It is acrobatics in the air performed on silks, trapeze and ropes among other apparatuses. Zahra Harvey, owner of Air Born Aerial fitness in Fayetteville, teaches classes with her business partner Crystal Butler in their newly opened studio. They both also perform aerial shows across the state.

Every year, students from across the state form robotics teams to design a functioning robot to compete in a specified task. The teams have only 6 weeks to take the challenge & complete their robot for the competition season to begin. The teams must raise funds, get corporate sponsorships, & learn how to program and make a robot work for the designed task.

Red Cross Disaster Assistance Teams provide relief & support to communities in need. Researchers study the impact of chemicals in society. And 11 year-old Presley Barker is a guitar prodigy.

Veterans Police Training Program

When police officers are called to a crisis situation, the hope is to talk the suspect out. When the suspect is a military veteran suffering from PTSD, traditional training is not always good enough. Now local police are training other North Carolina agencies a new option for solving these situations.
