Gail Zimmermann Named Interim Director and General Manager of UNC-TV
CHAPEL HILL -- Gail Zimmermann, associate general manager of UNC-TV, North Carolina's statewide public television network, will become interim director and general manager effective February 1. Zimmermann will succeed Tom Howe, who announced last fall that he would retire January 31 after a 45-year career in public television, including 21 years leading UNC-TV.
In announcing Zimmermann’s appointment, University of North Carolina President Tom Ross said: "Having spent more than 15 years in a key leadership role, Gail is uniquely qualified to oversee the operations of UNC-TV during this time of transition. The organization will be in very capable hands as we search for a new permanent director, and I'm grateful that Gail has agreed to take on this important assignment."
Since joining UNC-TV in November of 1996, Zimmermann has served as deputy director and chief operating officer for the organization, overseeing the operation of the state network. Her responsibilities have included providing leadership in increasing non-state revenues, developing the schedules for UNC-TV’s digital channels, and implementing UNC-TV’s Strategic Plan.
Zimmermann came to UNC-TV after 16 years with PBS flagship station WGBH-TV in Boston, Massachusetts. Her last position at WGBH was director of program marketing and national scheduling where she was responsible for national program promotion and scheduling, program marketing, and station relations. She also held positions at WGBH in product merchandising, design, administration, and publishing.
A native New Englander, Zimmermann holds an M.A. in management from Simmons College Graduate School of Management and a B.A. in political science/international relations from the University of New Hampshire.
Zimmermann is married to David Ferriero, previously the Andrew W. Mellon director and chief executive of the Research Libraries at the New York Public Library and currently the archivist of the United States. They live in Durham, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C.
UNC-TV provides people of all ages with enriching, life-changing television through its distinctive array of programs and services, including four digital channels: flagship UNC-TV; UNC-EX The Explorer Channel; UNC-KD The Kids Channel; and the North Carolina Channel, stories with a local accent.
