Through PBS's Ready to Learn Service, UNC-TV promises an educational television service that is valuable and supportive of parents, caregivers, and others involved in getting young children ready to learn. The Ready to Learn Service (RTL) on PBS is public television's response to the educational goal that all American children start school "ready to learn."
RTL is an unprecedented combination of services, including: the full line-up of PBS children's series--the quality educational, nonviolent, noncommercial programming that parents have trusted for two generations; specially-produced "program break" segments delivering educational messages; and a variety of outreach services and materials for parents, teachers, and other caregivers. The service is targeted to children ages 2-12.
The PBS Children's Programming and Ready to Learn staffs have identified nine subject areas important to address in order to ensure that our service is educationally valuable. These categories are based on the list of school-readiness skills identified by the Technical Planning Subgroup on School-readiness for the National Education Goals Panel (1991).
PBS Ready To Learn is supported by a cooperative agreement from the U. S. Department of Education, PR/Award Number R295A00002.
