Words that Cook! Parenting with children’s books™ is a half-hour program that celebrates the joy of reading, the art of writing, the wonder of storytelling, and the magic of wordplay through a combination of interviews and live action spiced up with animated fun. Designed for educators and parents of children ages 0–12, each episode features professionals, experts, parents, and children modeling and discussing enjoyable and practical techniques for enriching literacy experiences. Recipes for Success™ provide creative tips, tools, and techniques for bringing literacy to life in the classroom and at home.
The Words that Cook!™ website features recommended booklists and related resources and activities. The primary goals are to encourage recognition of the connection between helping children reach their potential and the necessity for creating opportunities for reading, writing, and communicating together; and to reinforce the cornerstones of reading—phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension—and the often-neglected motivation to read. Consumer DVDs of the shows include original episodes and bonus material and can be purchased individually or as a set.
PBS Ready To Learn is supported by a cooperative agreement from the U. S. Department of Education, PR/Award Number R295A00002.
