Education Forum Looks at Home-School Connections & Distance Learning
Saturday, May 12, at 11 AM

In today's competitive environment, it is more important than ever that parents become involved in their child's education. Part of that involvment revolves around a parent's relationship with his or her child's teacher, forming a relationship that connects teachers and parents, in a meaningful way, in the combined goal of keeping our children educated, enriched, and informed.

And in today's busy world, parents and other adults often have to consider time spent in job and family responsibilities within the context of opportunities for their own education, whether it is for a delayed high school completion or for getting a college degree. Access to those opportunities becomes an important issue.

UNC-TV’s Diane Lucas hosts Education Forum, addressing these issues and more, Saturday, May 12, at 11 AM. In the segment "Home-School Connections," schools such as Eastway Elementary and Burton Elementary in Durham, NC, reveal how teachers and parents have come together to encourage the literacy skills of their students and children. Additionally, this program will shed light on PBS TeacherLine online professional development courses for teachers and how, using these courses, teachers can correlate what they learn in the classroom in a meanful way to involve parents in their children's learning.

In the segment, "Access Through Distance Learning," learn how adults can access lessons for a GED or for college course work using today's new media, either online or on-air, through UNC-TV and its partners.

Literacy experts—from college and university professors to literacy providers—come together to share a wealth of knowledge for parents and teachers. From free and low cost reading and literacy resources to how to connect to groups in your neighborhood that can help someone you know become a reader—learn how to tap into what our state already offers.
