About Adult Learning Services
- UNC-TV's adult learning services include:
- Adult basic education (GED Connections, TV 411)
- English as a Second Language (Connect with English, Crossroads
Café)
- College credit telecourses
- Professional development programs (the Models of Teaching
series and Education Forum)
The award-winning series, GED Connection, is broadcast
over UNC-TV each semester and helps adults prepare for the new General
Educational Development (GED) test. Students learn to interpret
and analyze reading passages, write clearly and effectively, and
solve everyday problems in basic math and science. Settings and
subject matter are taken from real life situations to help adults
use the tools of a basic education to be better prepared for life
at home and on the job.
English As A Second Language (ESL)—UNC-TV broadcasts
Crossroads Café and other culturally diverse series each semester
to teach English to speakers of other languages. These series blend
cultural understanding and language skill building to depict the
backgrounds, challenges and struggles that impact ESL learners in
everyday work and home situations.
Telecourses
Through special programs integrating video, print
materials and an on-campus instructor, you can earn college credit,
and even a degree, in the comfort of your own home. UNC-TV broadcasts
telecourses on the 11 stations of our statewide network in association
with the North Carolina Telecourse Consortium. These telecourses
are available at a time that fits your busy schedule and are a popular
option for people who find it impossible or inconvenient to travel
to a campus for regularly scheduled classes. If you have digital
cable or can access digital services, UNC-ED broadcasts telecourses
24 hours a day.
Through Going the Distance, you an earn your college
degree through telecourses. The Going the Distance project offers
both entry level and advanced telecourses that allow adult learners
to earn a college degree. UNC-TV and participating telecourse colleges
continue to expand the program each year.
