It's known as the court of last resort - the US Supreme Court - where nine judges appointed for life make monumental decisions that govern our everyday lives, from the contents of newspapers to what we can do in the privacy of our own homes. This workshop will highlight resources designed to engage students in examining the important role of the US Supreme Court, including its relevance to our daily lives. Participants will be introduced to lesson plans and activities on the US Supreme Court created by StreetLaw and Chanel 13; video segments from "The Supreme Court" , PBS’s series on the history, impact, and drama of America’s highest court; and interactive web resources. Participants will also learn from former Supreme Court clerks during a lunch panel.

This workshop will also focus on the Supreme Court of North Carolina, the state's highest appellate court.  Attendees will participate in and receive additional lessons to engage students in understanding the complexity and relevance the North Carolina Supreme Court. Workshop participants will also have the unique opportunity to experience a theatrical presentation on the history of the Court and its compelling decisions by Wade and Roger Smith, attorneys and former North Carolina Supreme Court clerks.

Participants will receive:   .6 CEUs; lesson plans covering the US Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of North Carolina aligned to the NC Standard Course of Study; a $50 stipend upon the completion of one lesson plan (optional);  a DVD of video segments from "The Supreme Court" for use with lessons; breakfast and lunch. Participants will also learn how they can receive a free copy of PBS’s complete 4-DVD series "The Supreme Court", valued at $80.

REGISTRATION

Space is limited to the first 50 high school social studies teachers that register. To register for this training, download the application form here and fax it to 919.843.2558, attention Anita Buie.

Your registration is not final until your application form has been received. The first 50 applicants will receive notification via phone or e-mail of acceptance.

This training is free of charge. Limited reimbursement scholarships are available for teachers whose school systems are unable to cover the cost of a substitute. To request that the NC Civic Education Consortium cover the cost of a substitute, teachers must submit a letter signed by their principal explaining the need for substitute reimbursement. These letters should accompany the registration form.

CANCELLATION

The NC Civic Education Consortium is dedicated to assisting teachers by providing free trainings, resources, and materials. The CEC does not require a deposit or fee to attend our trainings; therefore, we ask that registered participants needing to cancel do so at least one week prior to the training date. This will enable us to fill the spot with someone else from the waiting list. Failure to provide sufficient notice of cancellation will prohibit the registrant from signing up for future trainings.
