Our Ready To Learn services seek to serve children and their families across our state and to promote school readiness and early literacy for all of North Carolina's children. As the state's Public Television Station, UNC-TV offers commercial-free children's television with ideas for learning included between programs. The tips support the programs by emphasizing specific themes. Children are encouraged to acquire information, to try new and different things, and to learn from their own experiences. Working through problems by talking, sharing and compromising is an important component. Additionally, children are shown how it is possible to be patient, and how to work to overcome obstacles in order to reach their goals-with stress on empowering children and reinforcing their sense of self worth and individuality.

UNC- TV's Ready To Learn services reach out across North Carolina to stimulate young minds in the areas of Physical/Motor Skill Development; Social/Emotional Skill Development; Critical Thinking/Problem Solving Skill Development; Language/Literacy Skills Development; Cognitive Skill Development; Science Study; Life Skills Development; Cultural/Social Diversity Appreciation; Understanding; and Music/ Art Appreciation and Performance.

Some of the other services provided under Ready To Learn include the following:

First Book / Ready To Read
First Book / Ready To Read fits well into North Carolina's literacy goal by working with designated partners statewide providing books and workshops for families, early childhood professionals, and other caregivers. Adults learn how to tie viewing PBS educational children's programs with reading and developmentally appropriate activities. The end result is adults with more information about how to nurture children's love of learning and reading and children who are developing better literacy skills. First Book is a non-profit organization dedicated to distributing new books to children who, for economic reasons have little or no access to books outside of school.

Distribution of PBS Families
PBS Families and PBS para la Familia booklets are distributed at Ready To Learn events (such as UNC- TV's Just For Kids Day at the North Carolina State Fair), Ready To Read events, through our UNC- TV Kids Club, through local partners, during related conferences and workshop training sessions, and upon request.

Read-a-Roo
UNC-TV's Reading Rainbow Book Club mascot. This seven-foot kangaroo visits schools and libraries across the state introducing children to the exciting world of reading. She attends reading awards programs, helps with story time, and travels to reading festivals encouraging children to read. Roo can be seen on UNC-TV between children's programming announcing various opportunities for children, such as the Reading Rainbow Book Club and the Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrator Contest .

PBS Ready To Learn is supported by a cooperative agreement from the U. S. Department of Education, PR/Award Number R295A00002.
