Barney is a loveable purple dinosaur who comes to life through children's imaginations. He is playmate to an ethnically diverse set of children who assists them in the solving of problems while exploring the world around them. The program is geared toward children ages 2 to 5. Educational goals are taught through play, singing songs, reciting rhymes and playing games.

Education themes include:

• Counting
• Identifying colors or shapes
• Making friends
• Sharing
• Good manners
• Cooperation

Workshops for parents, teachers and caregivers incorporate the use of the series and hands-on activities to reinforce concepts essential to the growth and development of young children.
