Icebreaker: Tracing the Hands
Hines:
Here is an activity that you can do at home or in your classroom. You will need the following materials: printed foam, scissors, markers or ink pens. The teachers are asked to select their own printed foam and trace one or both hands on the foam. In addition, as the teachers trace their hands, they talk about the designs and the textures of the foam. This will be an icebreaker activity for the workshop, or you can even use the materials as an art activity for the children in your care. Now, let’s go back to our workshop and listen to some of the teachers’ responses.
F:
So, the first thing we are going to do is you have in front of you a piece of foam that’s in the ___. I want you to trace your hand and then cut it out.
F:
Oh, she didn’t have one.
F:
We didn’t have—do you need one? Okay, we have one more beautiful lady who needs a foam to cut out. And this is your first activity that you’ll do. While we are doing it, tell me what do you see on this foam.
F:

Uh-huh, cut out one hand, unless you can get two hands up there [LAUGHTER].

I got both of mine.
