Ready To Grow - In Practice
Ebenezer United Church of Christ "Camp Good Gang" visited UNC-TV with their 35 1st through 5th graders (10 first & second graders, 10 third and fourth graders, and 15 fifth graders). Here are some pictures from a Ready To Grow session with children.
The teachers were trained and then the students participated in two activities from the Ready To Grow kit. One activity was a science activity called "Paleontology Fossil Chip Cookies Exploration." "Paleontologists use special tools and special care when digging fragile fossils out of the dirt. To get a better idea of what that work is like, the students carefully extracted the chocolate chips (fossils) out of the cookie (rock) using a toothpick and paintbrush." Students also listened to a story read by Dr. Merle Price.
The second activity was from the Character Education folder-Good Sportsmanship called " Building a Robot." The children worked in teams and created their own robots using legos. The contest was judged by the teachers and volunteers. Some of the adults assisted children who needed help! The winners were awarded a prize. In addition, the students viewed the Dragonfly TV Episode #101 on Building a Robot.
Clifford the Big Red Dog made a guest star appearance. He helped with the storytelling. Each child received a Polaroid picture with Clifford and one group picture was also taken. Students also toured UNC-TV's studio.
