Building Your Subject Area Video Library
In times of diminishing resources, it is important that you identify additional educational materials to enhance your curriculum.
School TV and Instructional Television brought into your home and school by UNC-TV's eleven station statewide public television network are FREE. They are designed by Educators For Educators.
- Learn to set your VCR .
- Purchase two hour tapes .
- Standardize the recording format . Regular Play (RP) insures the best quality of recording. Mark all boxes with (RP).
- Design a standard label . It should include:
- Title of the Program
- Curriculum Area
- Length of the show
- Date recorded
- Counter number - is more than one show on the tape.
- Teacher's Guide Information
- Copyright information
- Develop an evaluation form with your colleagues . It should contain such items as: the instructional value of the show intended audience; curriculum area of usage; instructional objectives; content; student and cross curriculum activities.
- Place a card in the box with the evaluation form to encourage the addition of classroom activities that others may do after viewing the program.
- Devise a filing system . you may wish to consider a color coding system for curriculum areas and copyright. Colored dots work well. Purple for perpetuity. yellow for a certain year, etc.
- Do not record too many shows on one tape . Videotape is inexpensive and you will consume too much time trying to find a program or certain sections of a show if an extremely long tape is used.
- After you have finished recording the shows, BREAK THE TAB on the cassette so that nothing else can accidently be recorded over the program. You Can always put tape over the hole if you wish to use the tape again.
