Candidate Biography (submitted by campaign):
For 26 years, Dr. Teresa Sue Bratton has practiced pediatric allergy in Guilford County. Though she retired her private practice at the end of 2005, she continues to run the allergy/asthma clinic for indigent children at Guilford Child Health and teach pediatric residents from University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. During this time she has had a chance to see how our health care system works for all segments of society.
As a pediatric allergist, she understands the connection between a healthy environment and a healthy population. Active in the North Carolina Pediatric Society’s Environmental Health Group, she has testified before the US EPA on air quality issues and was featured in the Southern Environmental Law Center’s 2005 Report “Clean Air for the Triad.” She has been active in groups, such as the American Lung Association, Guilford County Asthma Coalition and Smoke Free Guilford, where she has worked to ensure clean indoor and outdoor air.
In addition, Dr. Bratton has served as president of the Greater Greensboro Society of Medicine and on the Moses Cone-Wesley Long Community Health Foundation's Community Health Improvement Fund Board, the Vanderbilt Medical Alumni Association's Board of Directors and the BCBS of NC Physician Advisory Group.
For more than a quarter of a century Teresa Sue has called Greensboro home. She and her husband, Dr. Gustav Blomquist, Jr., are the proud parents of three grown children. Dr. Bratton is a member of First Presbyterian Church in downtown Greensboro. She is an avid tennis player, hiker and cyclist. She relaxes by gardening and recently graduated from the Master Gardener program of the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Agency in Guilford County. |
| Candidate Statement:
It's time for a change in Washington. I believe that the political winds make the 6th District Congressional seat more vulnerable that it has been in a long time. I believe that as a pediatrician, as a child health and environmental activist and as a small business owner, I am uniquely qualified to address the problems that voters are facing.
As a pediatric allergist, I have seen first hand that our medical system is failing patients who cannot afford care. I am uniquely qualified to advocate for a comprehensive change that helps all Americans receive affordable health care that invests in long term health.
As a small business owner, I understand the problems that we face with jobs, rising fuel prices and health care costs. I will advocate for small business development, for green local jobs, for community colleges that can retrain transitional workers and for research that will develop new products. But we also need to protect our citizens from predatory subprime mortgages by changes in our federal housing system and in our financial regulatory system.
As a wife and mother, I support federal protections for cleaner air and water and healthier, safer food. I will advocate for measures that stabilize global climate change and work to strengthen educational opportunities for our children.
As an American, I want to bring our young men and women home from Iraq expeditiously and redirect our efforts toward diplomatic solutions in the Middle East and the world, toward measures that protect us from terrorists such as Al-Qaeda, and toward restoring America's role as a world leader in promoting peace, prosperity, democracy, and human rights.
It is time for a change to leadership that will work for a healthier future. I ask for your vote in the Primary Election on May 6th.
