Candidate Biography (submitted by campaign):

Robin Hayes is serving his fifth term in the United States Congress, representing North Carolina's Eighth Congressional District. The Eighth District is in south-central North Carolina and includes Anson, Richmond, Scotland, Hoke, Montgomery, and Stanly counties, and portions of Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, Union and Cumberland Counties.

As a member of Congress, Robin has served to help the people of the Eighth district. While serving on the Agriculture, Armed Services, and Transportation Committees, Robin has succeeded in bringing millions in Federal assistance to improve roads, build water and sewer infrastructure, assist local farmers, improve military housing and facilities, and support local Police, Emergency, and Fire Departments.

Whether working to ensure children have the tools they need to succeed in school, helping seniors to obtain the proper social security benefits, or making certain that our veterans receive the benefits they deserve, Robin is proud in his record of service to North Carolina families.

As a senior member of the Armed Services Committee, Robin serves as a consistent voice for our men and women in uniform. He has fought hard to ensure our military service members have the best possible equipment, training, benefits, and quality of life. One of Robin's top priorities in Congress is to ensure our nation's veterans have the best possible health care and benefits.

In the wake of BRAC committee decisions to combine Pope AFB with Fort Bragg, Robin has worked tirelessly to help bring millions in Federal assistance and support to build new roads, establish new on-base schools, improve military housing, and create thousands of new defense industry jobs in North Carolina.

Robin attended Duke University, where he earned a bachelors degree in History. After attending Duke, he married his college sweetheart, Barbara. Robin and Barbara have now been married for 40 years and live in Concord, North Carolina. They have two children, Bob and Winslow, and they are now the loving grandparents of five.

Candidate Statement:

It is an honor to serve you as your Congressman in North Carolina's 8th District. My priorities in Congress continue to be economic development and national security.  We are working every day to create a better environment for job growth by improving infrastructure and addressing the issues that impact job creation.

Recent events have shown that there is no greater threat to our nation's economy than the rising cost of energy. People are tired of the finger-pointing and they want something done to fix the problem.

That's why I recently joined with a small number of Democrats and Republicans to introduce bipartisan legislation that will use more the resources we have available in our country while promoting conservation and funding the development of the energy of the future to enable us to move away from our dependence on oil.

I also believe that economic development and job growth depends on a quality education that spans elementary school through adult learning and job training.  That is why I have worked to bring more resources and initiatives into our 8th Congressional District classrooms at all levels.

When I entered Congress, I pursued committee assignments with importance to the people and the economy of the 8th District.  I currently serve on three House Committees: Agriculture, Transportation and Armed Services.  On Agriculture, I serve as the ranking member of the Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Subcommittee, and we were able to craft a new Farm Bill that is good for North Carolina. On Transportation I serve on the Highway and Aviation subcommittees, and with a new highway bill coming up, I will be in a prime position to address our growing transportation needs.
