| Candidate Statement:
To deal with major cuts in state funding, school systems statewide have discontinued some programs and laid off teachers.
I believe that a more rational approach is necessary. If required to do so, the first place to make cuts to balance the budget would be to after school programming. This does not mean cut the budget completely or do away with the programs altogether, however, may require student fees or increased fund raising to cover what is cut from the budget.
I was a band parent for my oldest daughter while she was at Central Cabarrus High School. For her to participate in the Band competitions cost us a minimum of $500.00 per year. This did not all come out of our pocket because the band provided fund raising opportunities. Sports programs may be forced to do similarly in order to fund the programs.
The next place to make cuts to balance the budget would be in school administration both at the central and local school level. Before making cuts in school programs, classes or teachers we need to make sure that Administration is a lean as it can be and still operate the school system at the central and local level.
It is my opinion that classes and teachers should be the last things that are ever cut from school budgets. If the idea is to give our children the best possible education so that they can have better lives than we do, the last thing to do is cut teachers.
