Janet Taylor for Commissioner on Facebook

Candidate Biography (submitted by candidate):

I grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia with my parents, sister, and brother. My father was a service member of the United States Navy. I graduated from Bayside High School in 1978 and also received my Cosmetology License from Virginia Beach VOTECH the same year. I have lived, worked and volunteered in Currituck County for 21 years.

I have been married for 31 years to Tim Taylor. Tim is an electrician by trade, former Ford Plant employee and member of IBEW Local 80. Together we have raised our children, Jesse and Markie. Jesse is now married to Helen and they have a son. Jesse was a service member in the United States Army and now currently serves as a Currituck County Sheriff's Deputy. His wife, Helen, works for Currituck County Schools as an elementary teacher. Markie graduated from UNC Pembroke with a degree in psychology this past May. We are members of the South Mills Church of Christ.

Currently I am serving as a Currituck County Commissioner since 2006. I also serve as a member of the College of the Albemarle Board of Trustees, Currituck County Fire and EMS, and Currituck County Department of Social Services. I served as a member of the Currituck County Board of Education for 14 years from 1992 until 2006. I served as both chairman and vice-chairman while on the school board. I also spent many hours as a volunteer in the schools.

I am a member of the local business community as the owner of Taylor's Total Look, a family hair salon in Moyock, since 2004.

Candidate Statement:

I have diverse experience and I am an accomplished individual who has contributed in significant ways to the betterment of Currituck County. I have deep roots in the county so I understand its needs and values. I am a member of the local business community which gives me an insight and understanding of how important it is to expand the business base in order to provide good paying jobs and economic growth for the county.

There is a need for balanced economic development. The future prosperity of Currituck requires that we develop a more diverse economic base and accelerate its growth.

It is critical that we spend tax payer's money wisely to address basic county needs - infrastructure, schools, sheriffs department, fire and EMS, and ensure the health and well being of all citizens. I am a firm believer that government exists to serve the people.

Remember ... "of the people, by the people, and for the people." Voters have the right to demand that their elected officials deliver results and stand accountable for their actions. This is the basis of trust between the two.
