Candidate Biography (submitted by candidate):

Worth Hill is a lifelong resident of Durham, North Carolina.  He has been actively involved in the Community for over 50 years and has been a law enforcement officer for over 45 years, having retired at the rank of Major from the Durham Police Department in 1988.  He was first elected Sheriff of Durham County, North Carolina in 1994 and is currently serving his fourth consecutive term.

Under Sheriff Hill's leadership, the Durham County Sheriff's Office received accreditation and has excelled to be one of the finest Sheriff's Offices in the State.  Significant changes have been made and numerous programs implemented to serve the varied needs of Durham citizens.  These initiatives include officers assigned to Schools, GREAT, TRIAD, Truancy, Crisis Intervention, Drug Diversion, Domestic Violence, Motor unit, SCOPE, K-9, Hazardous Devices, internet crimes, child support, tax collection and mobile technology.

Sheriff Hill has a BAS Degree in Administrative Services from Guilford College, AAS Degrees in Police Science and Fire Science from Durham Technical Institute and is a graduate from the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia.  He is a member of the National Sheriffs' Association, American Jail Association, North Carolina Jail Administrators Association and the North Carolina Sheriffs' Association Executive Committee.  He has previously served on the North Carolina Training & Standards Commission and Governor's Crime Commission. 

Candidate Statement:

Sheriff Hill has always displayed a strong passion for community involvement.  For over 20 years he served as a positive role model and mentor while coaching area high school and community association football teams.  He has served with many civic organizations to include the Durham Council on Alcoholism, American Legion, Durham Rotary Club, Oak Grove Ruritan Club, Durham Crime Cabinet, Durham Youth Advisory Board, Salvation Army Advisory Board and Chairman of the Durham Citizen's Safety Committee.  Also, he was awarded in 1978 Man of the Year by Durham Optimist Club, in 2006 the Hugo Germino Award by the Durham Sports Club and participated in past years with the Boys Scouts and Safety Patrol. 

In 2001, Sheriff Hill was awarded the prestigious honor of National Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by the American Legion's Forty & Eight. In 2002, he became the first recipient of the Outstanding Alumni Award presented by Durham Technical Institute.  In 2003, he was elected President of the North Carolina Sheriff's Association. 

The thing that the Sheriff is most proud of and received the most joy is working with our youth.  He feels that it is our duty to provide them with all the support needed to divert them from poverty, illiteracy, drugs and crime so that they can reach their full potential and live their dream.
