| Candidate Statement:
At such a critical juncture in our economy, accessibility and transparency are important aspects of school boardsmanship. All the while, we must be totally committed to ensuring that our students are engaged in world-class experiences that develop 21st century skills, cater to their learning styles, and encourage and reward their desire to learn and know more.
As community stakeholders, we play an important role in the development of quality education, which serves to prepare our students for global interdependence. Our impact can be felt -- and it is especially needed now -- in many ways. We can assist in the acquisition of relevant resources, volunteer in our schools, support the implementation of high-level curriculum, and help recruit high caliber educators.
My work as an advocate for overall student achievement and individual success has been varied. I chair the Board's Policy committee, as it is my objective to contribute to the development of policies and procedures that promote student achievement, assure the maintenance of a safe environment, and invite productive and appropriate involvement in public education. I have voluntarily logged more than 500 hours of board training, consistently met the legislative mandate to complete ethics training, and lent my voice as a lobbyist for public school funds. I also co-chaired the Closing the Achievement Gap Taskforce, served as the Board representative to the Academically and Intellectually Gifted program's Study Committee, and I have traveled across North Carolina and the United States recruiting highly qualified teachers for our students. I also participated in the school district's International Study Tour of Mexican Culture. Incidentally, I have maintained a nearly perfect attendance record, missing only one meeting in my 12-year tenure due to hospitalization.
I invite you to join me as we move the Johnston County Schools to the next level of world-class education!
