Candidate Biography (submitted by campaign):

Walter Jones was first sworn in to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1995, after serving 10 years as a member of the North Carolina General Assembly.  Jones strongly believes in the strength of faith and family and has worked to represent the citizens of Eastern North Carolina with both honor and integrity.

Since entering office, Congressman Jones has fought for an effective, commonsense government that returns power and control back to the people.  His commitment to providing tax relief for American families, retirement security for our nation's seniors, a strong national defense, and for quality education has earned him respect among his colleagues on both sides of the political aisle.

Currently serving his 7th term in Congress, Congressman Jones is a member of the House Committees on Armed Services and Financial Services.

As a member of the Armed Services Committee, Walter has concentrated on the well being of our nation's veterans and our men and women on active duty.

As a member of the Financial Services Committee, Jones has earned a reputation for fighting for small businesses, and for helping individuals gain greater access to capital and a broader array of financial services.

Jones has championed the rights of farmers, landowners and fishermen.  He has actively voiced the need to improve water quality for current and future generations, and has fought to protect our nation's farmers and their families.

Jones has been dedicated to preserving and protecting North Carolina's history and culture.  From preparing for the 2003 centennial anniversary of the Wright brother's first flight in Kitty Hawk, N.C., to passing legislation protecting the wild horses of Cape Lookout National Seashore, Jones has fought to preserve Eastern North Carolina's rich heritage.

Congressman Jones and his wife Joe Anne maintain their home in Farmville, North Carolina.

Candidate Statement:

In over 20 years of public service, I have done my best to reflect the strong values and beliefs of the citizens of Eastern North Carolina.

If I am privileged to continue to serve the people of the 3rd District, my top priority will be to protect the sovereignty of the United States of America by defending our borders and defending American jobs and working people.

Economic security for our working families -- and ensuring that young people know that they have a hope for a better future in Eastern North Carolina -- is my top priority.  As America ages, we will be facing a growing imbalance between the promises made to Americans by the government and the size of the workforce that will be called upon to fund those promises.  I am committed to working with members of both parties to correct those long-term fiscal imbalances.  That "fiscal time bomb" is the single greatest long-term domestic economic threat we face.

The United States needs to reassert its sovereignty in ways that benefit the existing citizens of this country.  We need to get control of our borders, renegotiate trade agreements that put our citizens at an unfair competitive disadvantage with other nations, and institute a foreign policy that puts the interests of the United States above those of elite international institutions.  If we don't do those things everything else we do will be for naught.

Serving the people of the 3rd Congressional District is a trust that I take seriously.  As long as I am privileged to serve as a Member of Congress, I will do my very best to reflect the values of Eastern North Carolina in a way that brings honor to the men and women who have sent me to Washington.
