Candidate Biography (submitted by candidate):
I learned about hard work growing up on a series of tenant farms in Johnston County. After graduating from high school, I set my sights on a law enforcement career, joining Kenly Police Department at the age of 20.
After a move to Goldsboro Police Department in 1977, I worked my way up through the ranks, gaining experience in all phases of law enforcement, as well as amassing over 2000 hours in a diversity of related training. While working, I was able to graduate from Wayne Community College with a degree in Law Enforcement Technology, and later from Mount Olive College with a Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice. I received my Advanced Law Enforcement Certification in 1989 and graduated from NC State University's Administrative Officer's Management Program in 1993. I retired from Goldsboro Police Department in 2006, with the rank of Captain.
Throughout my career, I was fortunate to be involved in the police department's budgeting process, and served on hiring and promotion boards throughout eastern North Carolina. I formed the GPD Honor Guard in the mid 1990's and served as its commander until my retirement. I was selected to serve on the original Police Tactical Team in 1984, and again when it was re-formed several years later.
Working two jobs most of my adult life, and taking an active role in all endeavors is indicative of the hard work you can expect as Sheriff.
My wife, Barbara, and I reside in the Rosewood/Oakland community. We are both members of Rosewood First Baptist Church. We have four children, five grandchildren, and 2 step-grandchildren.
I am a Licensed Building Contractor and Real Estate Broker. Our company, Re-Construction Company, has successfully thrived since 1993.

| Candidate Statement:
I will strive to create a "transparent" Sheriff's Department, with the understanding that we work for you, the citizen. I want to be proactive in preventing crime, not just reacting after the crime has occurred. As part of my goal to build trust with the communities, I want to put into place several methods for interaction between the Sheriff's Office and the public. This will provide opportunities to respond to real concerns, not perceived ones. I want to place more emphasis on fighting the ever-present problem of illegal drugs, focusing on those in the community instead of those passing through the county. I will evaluate methods of utilizing drug forfeiture funds, and ensure they are being effectively utilized. I will work to forge close working relationships with Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, and encourage cooperation with all local and state law enforcement agencies. It is crucial to keep the county safe, to maintain your quality of life while attracting new business and commerce.
