Sheriff Gary Banks began working for the Yancey County Sheriff's Office in January 1982 when he took an after school part time job as a janitor. Since that time he has worked as a Dispatcher, Jailer, Patrol Officer, Dare Officer, Detective and for the last 15 years as Chief Deputy. This was prior to being sworn in as a third generation Sheriff in January after the retirement of his father. He has shown proven leadership ability with a strong foundation in public safety and service. He is a highly experienced Criminal Justice Professional with over 24 year's dedication to the citizens of Yancey County and a history of consistently exceeding performance, training and education requirements.

Sheriff Banks is skilled in executive level techniques dealing with Law Enforcement, Staff, Budget, Logistics and Major Crisis. He has achieved well above average results in all types of job assignments. Sheriff Banks is highly motivated with a commitment to continually seek new and innovative methods and ideas to combat crime. He is ambitious with the skills needed to succeed in his chosen field of Law Enforcement Management. His qualifications include:
