| District Court (District 14 - Durham) |
|
I am a native of Durham, North Carolina. I attended Northern High School and continued my education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I completed a Bachelors of Science degree in the Administration of Criminal Justice and Psychology and later a Juris Doctorate.
In 1994, I took a position with Carolina Legal Assistance where I helped draft pleadings in the Thomas S. Class Action suit. I later accepted a position as a Judicial Clerk at the North Carolina Court of Appeals where I provided legal research and writing for Judges James A. Wynn, Clifton E. Johnson and Patricia Timmons-Goodson.
In 1997, I joined the Durham County District Attorney's Office, where I am currently serving as the supervisor of the Property and Fraud Team. During my tenure at the District Attorney's Office, I have aided in the evolution of prosecuting elder abuse cases.
While my position in the District Attorney's office is consuming, I still make time for the community. I teach in Durham Technical Community College's Criminal Justice Program preparing our next generation of criminal justice professionals. I am also a member of SALT (Seniors And Law enforcement Together) where I work with senior citizens making sure that they learn how not to be victimized and making sure that those who do victimize the seniors are prosecuted.
I have worked as a mentor with Partners for Youth for over a decade where I provide guidance to youth about activities, education, and social skills. In addition, I also serve on several non profit Boards to include the George H. White Bar Association, Fourteenth Judicial Bar and Durham County Bar Association, and the Triangle Champions Track Club.

| Candidate Statement:
I have lived in Durham all of my life and believe I have a deep appreciation for its uniqueness and diversity. I am invested in this community as a citizen and native. This is my hometown and I am always interested in its past, present and future progress. I am committed to seeing that Durham becomes a place that we can all feel good about and be proud of.
I am running for District Court Judge because I believe I am qualified by experience, education and training. Because of my nearly thirteen years of working in the DA's office, I have gained valuable trial experience, a much deeper appreciation for the law and its ultimate role and impact on our judicial system and the everyday lives of our citizens.
I have also spent considerable time mentoring many of the youth in our community. Additionally, I have worked with the elderly to ensure that they are aware of the various issues affecting them such as crime prevention, health care aide exploitation, and avoiding fraudulent schemes. My work also allows me to work closely with law enforcement and other court personnel to facilitate greater efficiency in our judicial system. I believe I have the requisite temperament and demeanor to handle cases that affect the lives of others in a fair and impartial manner.
I believe that in order to be the best jurist you must be fair and impartial but yet be compassionate to those who come before you. You need to understand that people have different backgrounds and experiences and that regardless of or in spite of they are humans that make mistakes and they should be treated with respect and dignity when they are before the judge. It would be an honor to serve and I would appreciate your vote.
