Candidate Biography (submitted by candidate):
Darren is a lifelong resident of eastern Wake County, father of three, successful attorney and small businessman. He and his wife Tina live near the Shotwell community outside of Knightdale. Public schools played a critical role in Darren's life. He attended public elementary and middle schools in eastern Wake, East Wake High School, and UNC-Chapel Hill where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science (Class of 1993). Darren then earned his law degree from Duke University and passed the Bar in 1996.
With his education complete, he began practicing law in Zebulon with Gay & Stroud. When Donna Stroud left to serve on the bench in 2004, the firm became Gay & Jackson. Darren enjoys a typical small-town general practice with an emphasis on civil litigation.
Considering his deep eastern Wake roots, it's no surprise that Darren is very active in the community. He has served as a mentor in the Communities in Schools program at East Wake Middle., Vice-President of the East Wake Education Foundation, and as Democratic Chair of his home precinct. In addition, Darren has coached over 30 youth sports teams in the last 15 years. His family is a member of Knightdale United Methodist Church.
Since his appointment, Darren has hit the ground running. Speaker Hackney named him to seven committees: Appropriations, State Government/State Personnel, Education, Judiciary II, Local Government I, Aging, and Alcoholic Beverage Control. Significantly in a district with the highest concentration of state employees in the state, he is the Vice Chair of State Government/State Personnel. He is also on the subcommittees dealing with K-12 education and appropriations for justice and public safety.
