Candidate Biography (submitted by candidate):
The son of immigrants who left Ireland to seek a better life for themselves and their family in the United States, Ed has lived the American Dream.
Ed is an experienced educator and businessman who will use his experience to improve the lives of working people in Mecklenburg and Union Counties.
A retired dean and professor at the College of Charleston, Ed was known for his administrative, teaching and organizational skills. He was also a dean and a faculty member at Rutgers University and the University of Rhode Island. Ed also served in State government as Commissioner of Higher Education in Pennsylvania and Chancellor of Higher Education in Massachusetts. Ed is also a businessman, having served as Vice President for Corporate Development at Comcast Corporation and founder of Behavioral Science Associates, a management counseling firm.
Ed is a patriot, serving his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier "Coral Sea" during the Korean War. He is a dedicated family man, married to Paula McGuire who teaches in Union County Schools. Ed and Paula share seven children and eleven grandchildren.
With degrees from four universities and experience in the world of business, Ed is knowledgeable about the issues facing each of us in the 35th North Carolina Senate District. He is committed to being a full time Senator and making a difference for the working people in his district.
