Candidate Biography (submitted by candidate):

The son of immigrants who left Ireland to seek a better life for themselves and their family in the United States, Ed has lived the American Dream.

Ed is an experienced educator and businessman who will use his experience to improve the lives of working people in Mecklenburg and Union Counties.

A retired dean and professor at the College of Charleston, Ed was known for his administrative, teaching and organizational skills. He was also a dean and a faculty member at Rutgers University and the University of Rhode Island. Ed also served in State government as Commissioner of Higher Education in Pennsylvania and Chancellor of Higher Education in Massachusetts. Ed is also a businessman, having served as Vice President for Corporate Development at Comcast Corporation and founder of Behavioral Science Associates, a management counseling firm.

Ed is a patriot, serving his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier "Coral Sea" during the Korean War. He is a dedicated family man, married to Paula McGuire who teaches in Union County Schools. Ed and Paula share seven children and eleven grandchildren.

With degrees from four universities and experience in the world of business, Ed is knowledgeable about the issues facing each of us in the 35th North Carolina Senate District. He is committed to being a full time Senator and making a difference for the working people in his district.

Ed is an independent man who needs you vote on November 2, 2010.

The following is what I will work to achieve in the North Carolina Senate:

Jobs

Tax relief for small businesses of 5 percent
Rewriting of the North Carolina Tax Code
Clearly established state spending priorities
Development of a high-tech corporate park

Education

Competitive teachers' salaries and a teachers' "Bill of Rights"
Manageable class size
Teacher retiree protection plan
Educational choice for parents and children

Property Rights

Protection against forced annexation
Limit the use of eminent domain

Ethics in State Government

Complete transparency in state government
Protection for the media in revealing confidential sources
Disclosure of appointees to State Boards and Commissions
