Candidate Biography (submitted by candidate):

Dr. Michael Beitler (pronounced Bite-ler) is the Libertarian candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2010. Dr. Beitler is a Business Professor at UNC-Greensboro. Mike is also an author, management consultant, and a radio talk show host.

Mike was born into a blue-collar family in east Baltimore. His father was a Republican; his mother was a Democrat. He adopted his father's conservative fiscal beliefs and his mother's liberal social beliefs. But politically he was "homeless" until he found the Libertarian party.

Mike's father, an airplane mechanic who dropped out of high school as a young man, encouraged Mike to get an education.

At the age of 22, Mike graduated from the University of Central Florida with a B.S. degree in Finance & Economics. He moved back to Baltimore and was hired by one of the largest international CPA/consulting firms. Soon after that, he passed the CPA exam.

In 1985, Mike entered the banking industry. He was promoted to Chief Financial Officer, a position he served in for 10 years. While in banking he began teaching part-time at a local college.

In August of 1997, Mike joined the faculty of The Bryan School of Business & Economics at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.

Dr. Beitler has published three business books including, Strategic Organizational Change, which is required reading in MBA programs worldwide. His DVD, Overcoming Resistance to Change, has been ranked the #1 business video on amazon.com.

Mike's book on political philosophy, Rational Individualism: A Moral Argument for Limited Government & Capitalism, is widely acclaimed by libertarians and free-market advocates as a guide for today's political and economic issues. Mike's radio show, "Free Markets," airs live on Thursday mornings on the VoiceAmerica Business Network.

His websites are www.mikebeitler.com and www.beitlerforussenate.org. He can be reached via email at mike@mikebeitler.com.

Candidate Statement:

As the Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate this year in North Carolina, I am the only fiscal conservative in the race. My Republican opponent voted for TARP, supports corporate welfare, and has taken millions of dollars in corporate special-interest PAC funds. My Democratic opponent believes we need even more Federal government spending to "stimulate the economy."

The economy is a critical issue in this election; we must create "real" jobs. New government jobs harm the economy. To pay the salaries of new government employees, money must be taken from the private sector in the form of taxation. Only the private sector produces goods and services that lead to the creation of real jobs. Small businesses are the engine of innovation and job creation is our economy; we must cut their taxes and reduce their regulatory burdens.

The size of government must be reduced. The national debt now exceeds $13 trillion (plus there is another $100 trillion in off-balance sheet obligation that will have to funded by the next generation). The Federal government must live on a balanced budget and be systematically paying down the national debt.

I support the rapid withdrawal of American forces from Iraq and Afghanistan. The purpose of the U.S. military is national defense, not international nation-building or empire-building. The best thing we can do for our troops is to bring them home. America cannot afford (nor does it have the authority) to serve as the policeman of the world. America should have trade with all nations, but military entanglements with none.

Big business in bed with big government (cronyism) must end. Big business buying influence with big government is disgraceful. Corporate welfare must be abolished. I will not accept corporate special-interest PAC contributions. Corporations use PAC contributions to buy influence.
