POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE:     Director of Production

REPORTS TO:      Director and General Manager

OBJECTIVE: Leadership position responsible for the design, execution, and evaluation of high-quality, enriching, educational, and inspiring original content produced by UNC-TV.  This position is responsible for leading, guiding, and managing the development, production, and distribution of more than 400 hours of UNC-TV original productions annually.  These productions include a full range of content—educational, informational, public affairs, cultural, historical, and performance series and specials.  The program formats include live studio, live on-location remotes throughout North Carolina, and on-location reports and documentaries.  The programs are distributed statewide on UNC-TV’s broadcast network, digital multicast networks, and UNC-TV’s Web site; several programs and series are nationally distributed.  UNC-TV, whose vast reach makes its audience the fourth largest public television market, produces an acclaimed and award-winning nightly information series, 11 weekly series, and a variety of general audience prime-time specials.  The director of production works with UNC-TV’s executive management, Editorial Board, and the department’s executive producers to set and ensure adherence to UNC-TV’s and national public television distributors’ technical, aesthetic, and contractual requirements.  S/he works with executive producers to apply journalistic guidelines to ensure editorial integrity and adherence to UNC-TV’s standards of accuracy, fairness, and balance in all UNC-TV original productions.  The director of production is a vital member of the senior management team and has responsibility for developing and implementing long-range strategic plans.  This position requires an inspiring leader with the capacity to motivate and support 54 staff and 41 contract employees to perform at the highest level in their crafts.

DIRECT REPORTS: Direct responsibility for the supervision of the director of internal productions and technical operations, the director of operations, the executive producer for content, the executive producer for external productions, and the production business manager.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Lead staff, in conjunction senior management and the Editorial Board, in long-range planning of original production projects that contribute to UNC-TV’s mission goals/objectives, philosophies, and policies.
  2. Set and ensure maintenance of journalistic and creative quality standards for original productions, and provide technical and aesthetic critiques of new and ongoing UNC-TV productions.
  3. Set standards for editorial integrity in UNC-TV production efforts and ensure adherence to those standards.
  4. Focus extensively external relationships that result in partnerships and collaborations in the production of original content.
  5. Work closely with the associate general manager, the director of foundation and federal grants, and the development staff to raise funds to support UNC-TV original productions.  Develop successful programs for on-air fund-raising.
  6. Represent the Production Department at statewide events and activities, as well as at national conferences and meetings.
    • Motivate, supervise, and evaluate the effectiveness of all direct reports; recruit, hire, assign, motivate, appraise, discipline, mentor, and counsel production staff.  Ensure excellent customer service to UNC-TV constituents (e.g., viewers, contributors, staff, independent producers, corporate supporters, and board members).
  7. Oversee all departmental administrative activities related to full-time permanent personnel, contracted personnel, contracted services, production and licensing agreements, purchasing, travel, and files and records.  Prepare, monitor, and execute the Production Department’s annual work plan and budget.  Provide principal leadership in developing original production project operating/expansion budgets and contracts and in ensuring effective, fiscally responsible administration of production project budgets and utilization of staff and facility resources.

Ensure adherence to relevant laws, rules, regulations, guidelines, and policies, including those of the Federal Communications Commission, the state of North Carolina, and the University of North Carolina.

  1. Assume other UNC-TV management activities as assigned.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate for this position should have:

A higher education degree (preferably a master’s degree) and at least ten years related experience or equivalent combination of experience/education.  At least five years demonstrably successful management experience.

A thorough understanding of and commitment to public broadcasting.

Experience with strategic planning.

Experience in a deadline-sensitive, stressful work situation demanding a high-energy, positive, and flexible responsiveness to changing circumstances.

Demonstrated current affairs and journalistic standards, as well as high-quality public television programming standards.

Demonstrated knowledge of the emerging digital media and television production.

Demonstrated knowledge of FCC rules and regulations.

Knowledge of North Carolina’s state culture, art, history, economy, geography, communities, businesses, industries, institutions, and leaders.

Valid driver’s license and some travel required.

The ideal candidate for this position must be:

  • A “people person,” not just comfortable meeting others, but genuinely interested in them.
  • An active listener, who not only takes in what is being said but signals understanding to the speaker.
  • Knowledgeable about a broad range of interests and therefore able to comfortably converse on many subjects.
  • Passionate about public broadcasting and willing to convey that zeal.
