Songs About Walking

Hines:
Music is such an integral part of learning.  Now let’s learn more and practice some songs about walking.  Join us as you get up and move your feet.  We will introduce to you songs about walking such as “A Walking We Will Go,” “Walking, Walking,” “The Ants Go Marching,” and “I’m Glad I’m Me.”

Hines:
PBS and UNC-TV promote a Fit Together lifestyle.  PBS programs such as Arthur, and this is Mr. Arthur here if any of you have never seen him before.  Hi, Arthur, we are glad you are here.  And J.J. the Jet Plane which we saw earlier, Sesame Street with Big Bird who is not here—I love Big Bird, and Clifford the big red dog who is over there hiding behind the books.  All of those programs have lesson plans around fitness so you can go to the website at unctv.org to pull up those lesson plans or to the PBS Kids.org website.  Now turn to “A Walking We Will Go” song.  This is a song that I created for you.  Let’s stand up.  Of course I told you we were not going to sit down because we are walking.  Now to make this song really work for you, I am going to ask you to hold the paper in your hand and we are going to walk around the table, okay?  Now those who are on the second row and the third row, you just, everybody is just going to follow this person—you are just going to lead us around the table, okay?  So everybody just follow her and sing your song.  Try not to trip on anybody.  You think you can do it?  Okay.  Ready?  And it is to the tune of “Farmer in the Dell”—I had to remember that.  Ready, set, go.  A walking we will go, a walking we will go, one, two, three, four, five, a walking we will go.  We are walking with a friend.  My friend is Read-A-Roo.  We’re walking, walking every day for that’s the thing to do.  A walking we will go.  A walking we will go.  One, two, three, four, five, a walking we will go.  We’re walking with my friend.  My friend is Read-A-Roo.  Get on your place.  We are walking, walking every day for that’s the thing to do.  Give yourselves a big hand for walking.  And this is a song that you can sing with the children in the classroom to encourage them to walk.  It is a song, at least a tune that they are familiar with, and then you can create your own walking song.  So that was just one I came up with.

Here is another song about walking and it is to the tune of “Are You Sleeping”?  Are you ready?  Now you have to stand up for these songs, you can’t sit down.  We are walking, we are trying to build up our—I’m sorry if I told you to sit down forgive me; don’t pay attention to me any more when I tell you to sit down yet.  Now this time you don’t have to leave your seat, you can walk in place.  Okay?  “Walking, walking, walking, walking, hop, hop, hop, hop, hop, hop, running, running, running, running, running, running, now we stop, now we stop.”  One more time.  “Walking, walking, walking, walking, hop, hop, hop, hop, hop, hop, running, running, running, running, running, running, now we stop, now we stop.”

Now don’t move yet.  In the reading that I also saw it said it was very important for you to have great posture when you are walking.  You should not look down or have your shoulders arched over.  So let’s try that again this time with straight posture, with your head up, and try to not hurt yourself.  Ready, set, go.  “Walking, walking, walking, walking, hop, hop, hop, hop, hop, hop, running, running, running, running, running, running, now we stop, now we stop.”  Okay.  Don’t sit down yet.  That particular one came from the National Institute of Health, Department of Health and Human Services.

Here is one about the “Ants Go Marching.”  You know that one, right?  So you don’t need the paper.  You can just march on this one.  Are you ready?  And this time you can actually move if you want to.  So we are going to follow our friend again.  I tell you what, this time let’s follow Ms. Sherry, she is going to be our leader.  Ready Ms. Sherry?  All right.  Ready, set, go.  “The ants go marching one by one, hoorah, hoorah.  The ants go marching one by one, hoorah, hoorah.  The ants go marching one by one, the little one stopped to suck his thumb and they all go marching down to the ground to get out of the rain, boom, boom boom.  The ants go marching two by two, hoorah, hoorah.  The ants go marching two by two, hoorah, hoorah.  The ants go marching two by two, the little one stopped to tie his shoe and they all go marching down to the ground, to get out of the rain, boom, boom, boom.  The ants go marching three by three, hoorah, hoorah.  The ants go marching three by three, hoorah, hoorah.  The ants go marching three by three, the little one stopped to climb a tree and they all go marching down to the ground to get out of the rain, boom, boom, boom.”  We are going to five?  “The ants go marching four by four, hoorah, hoorah.  The ants go marching four by four, hoorah, hoorah.  The ants go marching”—pick up those feet, pick up those knees—“and they all go marching down to the ground to get out of the rain, boom, boom, boom.  The ants go marching five by five, hoorah, hoorah.  The ants go marching five by five, hoorah, hoorah.  The ants go marching five by five, the little one stopped to _____ and they all go marching down to the ground to get out of the rain,” and we can stop right there.  Okay you go back to your seat.  Okay.  You might need to hydrate your body now so get you some water.  All right.  Stand up.  We are standing while we are singing.

How many of you know the song about I’m glad I’m me?  It is a story about Sammy.  His father sent him out to buy bread but Sammy didn’t feel like walking, he wished he could fly instead.  So we are just going to sing one verse of it and then we will sit down.  Ready, set, go.  “This is a story about Sammy.  His father sent him out to buy bread.  But Sammy didn’t feel like walking.  He wished he could fly instead.  And he said if I were a bird I would fly to the store, fly to the store, fly to the store.  If I were a bird I would fly to the store, fly to the store, fly to the store for my mother.”
